Ahead of this summer's Olympic Games in Paris, France, design firms Concepto and Studio 5.5 installed 350 streetlights made from recycled scaffolding poles and lampposts in the Olympic Village. The lighting project is part of a program overseen by the Olympic Games delivery agency Solideo, which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 47% compared to traditional projects.
Landscape design firm Agence TER, which was responsible for the masterplanning of the public realm, worked with Studio 5.5 to create low-carbon materials for these spaces, including lighting and street furniture. To put this sustainable design agenda into practice, the street lighting design is made from decommissioned lampposts and components from construction sites.
Each streetlight has a beam made from recycled scaffolding poles that supports one or two energy-saving LED light sources. The beam is angled to shine light directly onto the road, while being high enough to avoid trees and allow tall vehicles such as buses and fire trucks to pass underneath.
